3 Problematic Theories and 1 That Works

Time out is a tool with a bad reputation in some circles. This DVD explains how the tool and technique of time out is used poorly because of three problematic orientations or theories of time out itself. One theory (the theory that gets time out “banned” from programs) falsely assumes avoiding negative experiences is inherently more compelling than any other motivation for behavior. This theory of time out, rather than the tool or technique of time out is revealed to create adult vulnerability to misunderstanding and misuse to the extent that it can become abusive. Two other often utilized but inappropriate theories of time out that are not developmentally appropriate are also discussed. The fourth and final theory of time out focuses on inclusion rather than exclusion. Teachers and other adults are guided to recognize their role in setting boundaries through time out to develop children who will be successful in families, classrooms, and later social situations.
